Imperial War Museum North

The acclaimed architect Daniel Libeskind designed this extraordinary building to represent the shards, or fragments, of a world shattered by conflict.  On the left is the Air Shard, constructed from an open latticework of steel through which the wind whistles.  To the right is the roof of the Earth Shard which holds the main exhibition areas.  There is also the Water Shard, which holds a restaurant and overlooks Salford Quays, the redeveloped former Manchester Docks.
