Rochdale

1 Nov 11   Took a train to Rochdale for a wander around, then train back to Manchester. The weather
was now too good to waste so I jumped on a tram to Salford Quays, as you do.
Sunny intervals at first, gradually improving throughout the day.

Statue of John Bright (1811-89).  Quaker, Radical and Liberal statesman,
associated with Richard Cobden in the formation of the Anti-Corn Law League.

Touchstones Art and Heritage Centre.  Originally a public library, built 1884.

Detail from the Touchstones building - 'Victory crowning Arts & Crafts'.

The tower of Rochdale Town Hall.  The architect W. H. Crossland designed Rochdale's
gothic style Town Hall but Alfred Waterhouse, architect of Manchester Town Hall, designed
the tower.  It replaced the original tower which was destroyed by fire in 1883.

Rochdale Town Hall.   W. H. Crossland, 1871.  Legend has it that Hitler coveted the
fine stained glass windows (or in one version of the legend, the whole building),
planning to remove them to Germany on his hoped for victory.

The War Memorial.  Sir Edward Lutyens, 1922.

Tiled mural on the wall of a pedestrian underpass.

The Parish Church of Saint Chad.  Mostly 15th century with some 19th century additions.

A grotesque on Saint Chad's Church.

The Deaf Institute.  The original words 'and Dumb' have been blanked off.

Street sign.

'Pulsar' by Peter Freeman, 2003.  A motion sensor triggers colour changes every time
a pedestrian walks by.  When it's quiet the colours change slowly but when the street is
busy a new colour sequence is triggered every time someone passes by.

Back in Manchester - wind generator on the roof of a Green Quarter building.

The City Lofts and NV apartment blocks.

A fine evening for sculling.

Flat calm at dusk - I should have brought my tripod.
