The Durham CowA centuries-old legend explains how the body St.Cuthbert came to rest at Durham. Fearing Viking raids, Cuthbert's remains were brought by monks from Lindisfarne to the mainland for safe-keeping. According to local folklore a revelation instructed the monks to move the holy relics to Dunholme (Durham) and a milkmaid, bringing her cow to the town, directed their way.
