The curious name Anaconda Cut refers to an engineering project carried out in the
fifties and sixties to ease flooding problems in Salford. A huge meander of the river
Irwell was bypassed, drained and the river course rationalised and straightened.
This huge, forgotten, project was called the Anaconda Cut,
the name a nod to the snake-like Irwell.
