Temple de La Sagrada Familia |
| Most major cities have a distinctive monument and for Barcelona it is beyond doubt Gaudí's masterpiece the Temple de La Sagrada Familia. Work began in 1882 and it is still unfinished, however it is planned that it will be completed in 2024. Gaudí devoted more than forty years of his life to this great cathedral and for his last twelve years declined all other work. He even moved to live within the precincts of the church so that he could be as close to the construction site as possible. |

His dream was of three façades representing the birth, death and resurrection of Christ, and eighteen mosaic clad towers symbolising the Twelve Apostles, the Four Evangelists, the Virgin Mary, and Christ. Even in its unfinished state it has become a world-wide symbol of Barcelona, one of the great architectural wonders of the world and a must on every visitor's itinerary.
